Love Murder? Check out the Slaycation podcast

Long time Craft listeners (I believe there may be at least one) will know that I like horror fiction. Podcast host Kim Davis feels the same way about true crime and has a turned her interest into the comedic true crime podcast Slaycation, which focuses on vacations that end in murder or mysterious disappearances. Along with her co-hosts Adam Tex Davis and Jerry Colbert, she examines true crimes and contemplates why criminals do what they do. We discuss how the podcast began, notable cases she’s covered, her research process, and the emotional impact of the stories.

Listen in to hear about matricide and abductions in vacation spots. It will make you think twice before you hop into an airplane with your family bound for a warm spot because who knows what the guests or bellhop might be up to?

Robert Bordone: Is Conflict an Obstacle or an Opportunity?

The past few years have seen rising problems in the United States and increasingly divided citizenry. Conflict seems to be getting worse. So what can we do? Harvard negotiation expert Robert Bordone argues that conflict can be reframed as a positive force for stronger relationships and more authentic connections. Bordone and co author behavioral neurologist Joel Salinas, M.D., have published Conflict Resilience: Negotiating Disagreement Without Giving Up or Giving In, and offer ways to turn conflict from obstacle to opportunity.

Listen in to hear more:

The Ohioana Library and Kimberlee Kiehl: Preserving Ohio’s Artistic Legacy

Ohioana Library founder Martha Kinney Cooper

Dr. Kimberlee Kiehl became Executive Director of the Ohioana Library in May 2024, and she joined me to discuss the library’s mission, notable collections, and upcoming events.

Founded in 1929 by
Martha Kinney Cooper (left), the Ohioana Library has worked to preserve the literary works of Ohioans, with a collection of over 90,000 books, as well as original artwork, and self-published works. It also includes papers from renowned Ohio authors like Toni Morrison, Lois Lenski, and Bexley’s own R.L. Stine.

Be sure to mark May 3rd on your calendar and attend the Ohioana Book Festival, which will be returning to the State Library of Ohio, the place I first did Ohioana interviews, years ago. Ohioana has revamped its membership and sponsorship tiers to include more engaging benefits, encouraging deeper connections with the community, so check those out. Go, Ohio!

Brother Brothers

Identical twins Adam and David Moss perform as the Brother Brothers, and they’ll be in Columbus on January 10, 2024, with Six String Concerts. Tune in to hear more about their music, their influences and which brother is into  Brazilian Tropicalia right now (hint, it’s not the one you think).

Happy Hard-Boiled Holiday! Tod Goldberg’s Dark Hanukkah

New York Times best-selling author Tod Goldberg has turned to editing for his latest work, Hanukkah Noir: Eight Very Bad Nights. The collection features 11 stories by critically acclaimed authors and explores the dark, noir side of Hanukkah. As Goldberg puts it:

Hanukkah is the perfect holiday for a noir setup because it’s eight nights. By about the third night, if you’re with your family, you’re ready to kill somebody.

When he isn’t destroying a beloved holiday, Goldberg is a professor wf writing as well as a hardboiled author who specializes in “ bad people doing bad things to worse people.”

Check out his anthology and maybe dip into his very interesting back catalog that includes original novelizations for the TV show Burn Notice.

Erika Engelhaupt says, Go to Hell (in a nice way)

Science writer Erika Engelhaupt, author of one of my favorite recent books, Gory Details: Adventures From the Dark Side of Science, joins me to discuss her new book Go to Hell: A Traveler’s Guide to Earth’s Most Otherworldly Destinations. It’s a travel bucket list with over 50 destinations worldwide that are linked to various interpretations of hell, underworlds, and eerie locations. Engelhaupt says that “cultures throughout history and around the world have had some kind of version of the underworld,” so she worked with the editors at National Geographic to create a book that highlights some of these underworlds. From the Gates of Hell crater in Turkmenistan (but missing the Gates of Hell in Clintonville) to the Hell Cave of Ireland to the Bracken Bat Cave in Texas, Engelhaupt has plenty of hellish locations for you. Check it out.

He explores death, fatherhood, nature, and empathy, along with other topics. Demaree discusses his approach to poetry, emphasizing the importance of the writing process over the final product. Demaree’s productivity may be partly explained by his personal rituals, such as consuming sugar only while writing. Listen in to the interview to hear more about his feelings about the future and the socio-political landscape of Ohio.
