I’m very lucky that my best friend is a huge Mothra fan – Liana Kangas
Comic book illustrator & creator Liana Kangas took time from her fans at the GalaxyCon 2025 in Columbus to discuss her creative journey and recent projects. Best known for the Hugo-longlisted sci-fi thriller Know Your Station, True Cult, She Said Destroy, and contributions to major franchises such as Star Wars, Archie, and Star Trek, Kangas’ career has spanned genres and media.
Her latest achievement includes an Eisner Award-winning co-created story in IDW’s Godzilla’s 70th Anniversary anthology, in which she explores themes of protecting marginalized communities and features Mothra as a protector.
Kangas credits her early experiences at local comic shops for her love of manga and anime. She has also been influenced by advice from industry legend Mike Mignola: “Draw something you want to draw for yourself, not for the market.”
