Although he’s often known for his popular YouTube videos dealing with hecklers, comedian Steve Hofstetter says that he gets far fewer hecklers noe than when he started out.
Hofstetter, in town on June 23 at the Funny Bone Comedy Club, estimates that he gets heckled 1–2% of the time now versus 10–20% early on when he played small towns and unfamiliar rooms. With larger rooms in larger cities, he has also built up his returning audience: “ I find that the more people know exactly what they’re dealing with, the less they’re going to heckle.”
Hofstetter sees his comedy genre as social criticism, which is inherently political or made political by issues like human rights and U.S. healthcare costs. He uses a current joke about paying for his child’s $32,000 delivery bill and Canadians’ confusion as an example of the kinds of topics that may not seem political but really are at the root.
If you’re in the mood for a cathartic space for like-minded people, emphasizing “joy is resistance,” then catch Steve Hofstetter at the Funny Bone.
